From Student to Teacher: Sharing the Joy of Music

By: Sophia Popescu, Age 15

In this post, Sophia shares her memories of becoming a music teacher for the first time—and discovering how rewarding it can be to inspire a new generation of young musicians.

Looking back, I'm so happy that I decided to create this summer music program. I still remember how the early childhood music classes at Sharon Music Academy sparked my own love for piano when I was little, and I wanted to do the same for other children. After helping with children's recitals at SMA, I began to feel more confident leading a group of young students. One of the biggest challenges was deciding what to teach. I had so many ideas, but I had to learn how to organize them into activities that were fun, engaging, and age-appropriate. During the program, I quickly realized that every child learns differently, so I tried my best to give each student individual attention and help them grow at their own pace.

The most rewarding part of this experience was hearing the children and their families say how much they enjoyed the program. Seeing the kids smile, gain confidence, and become excited about music made all the preparation worthwhile. At the same time, I gained a whole new appreciation for how thoughtful and challenging teaching really is. This experience has inspired me to keep improving my teaching by combining not only music, but also ideas from psychology and other subjects to create even more engaging learning experiences for students of different ages and abilities. I had so much fun with every single one of my students, and I'm already excited to make future programs even better!
