Harmonizing Hearts: Teaching Violin in Kenya

By: Caroline Smoak, Violin Faculty Member

In the summer of 2023, my brother and I embarked on a musical adventure to Kenya, where we had the privilege of teaching violin at Rafiki School for a month. The experience was deeply fulfilling as the eager students, their eyes filled with curiosity, embraced the melodies and rhythms we shared. Each day was a new chapter, a symphony of challenges and triumphs, as we strived to bridge cultural gaps through the universal language of music.

In the heart of Kenya, we discovered that music knows no boundaries. It transcends borders, languages, and backgrounds, uniting people in a harmonious blend of cultures. As our time in Kenya came to a close, we left knowing that we had not only taught violin but had also celebrated the profound value of music as a source of connection and understanding in our diverse world. Kenya had enriched our lives, leaving us with memories that would resonate with us for a lifetime.
