Music Takes You All Over the World
The journey to Finland, Estonia, and Sweden proved to be a rejuvenating experience, just what the doctor ordered. Every moment, from our departure from New York to our exploration of Helsinki and beyond alongside the other Crescendo winners, was not only enjoyable but also enriching. As it was our maiden voyage to these destinations, my daughter and I were uncertain about what lay ahead. However, all our concerns dissolved the moment we encountered Dr. Alex Babayev, his wife, and the fellow musicians accompanied by their parents.
Our adventure commenced with a melodic exploration of Finland, where we delved into the country's rich musical culture, beginning with a visit to the iconic Sibelius Monument. The subsequent days unfolded with engaging master classes and recitals at the esteemed Helsinki School of Music and the captivating Rock Church. Collaborating with exceptionally talented Finnish musicians within the enchanting church was a truly remarkable experience. Our visit to the renowned Sibelius Academy, boasting a modern and versatile acoustic concert hall, left us in awe.
A ferry ride brought us to Tallinn for a splendid day. In this picturesque city, we explored Jean Sibelius's historic residence, indulged in some sightseeing, and enjoyed a bit of shopping. Given our vegetarian preferences, I was initially apprehensive about finding suitable dining options for Sahana and me. To my delight, meticulous attention was given to ensuring delightful vegetarian choices at every stop on our itinerary.
Following our delightful visits to Finland and Estonia, we embarked on a cruise bound for Stockholm. The children relished their time, fostering bonds, engaging in piano sessions, and enjoying spirited karaoke. In Sweden, our exploration led us to the enchanting Royal Palace on Gamla Stan Island. Sahana and I immersed ourselves in the charm of the old town, replete with quaint shops and Nordic culinary delights. Our centrally located hotel in modern Sweden, surrounded by vibrant restaurants and stores, provided a comfortable base for our adventures.
A highlight of our Swedish sojourn was the visit to the majestic Drottningholm Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site. A full-day excursion to Uppsala and the historic Sigtuna unveiled beautiful stone ruins, including the awe-inspiring Uppsala Cathedral, the tallest church building in Scandinavia.
The entire journey was meticulously orchestrated, ensuring both kids and adults savored a musical odyssey and the joys of sightseeing. Beyond their musical prowess, the young musicians in our group showcased their kindness and warmth. The master class served as the perfect culmination of this already fantastic experience. Witnessing the Masters of Music collaborating with the younger generation filled my daughter and me with excitement.
Beyond musical growth and performance, the trip fostered invaluable bonds among the children. Watching them forge close friendships throughout the journey, only to reluctantly bid farewell at its conclusion, was heartwarming.
I wholeheartedly encourage readers to embark on a similar journey. My sincere gratitude goes to the Sharon Music Academy, Dr. Alex Babayev (Director of Crescendo Competitions), and, most notably, Dr. Synthia Sture—Sahana’s teacher at SMA—for inspiring and supporting Sahana on this never-ending musical adventure, sustaining her spirits and love for music.
